A Record Suspension (formerly known as a Criminal Pardon), allows people who were convicted of a criminal offence but have completed their sentence and demonstrated they are law-abiding citizens to have their criminal record removed. Pardons are issued by the Federal Government of Canada. In most cases, this means that any search of the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) will not show that you had a criminal record, or that you were issued a Record Suspension. Having a criminal record can hold you back well after you’ve finished paying for your mistakes. They can hinder your career, travel plans, coaching, volunteering and more. Expunging a criminal record grants access again to doors that were once closed for you, allowing you to freely travel, apply for jobs, volunteer and coach.
A record suspension allows people who were convicted of a criminal offence, but have completed their sentence and demonstrated that they are law-abiding citizens for a prescribed number of years, to have their criminal record kept separate and apart from other criminal records.
Once a record suspension has been sent to the Parole Board of Canada, it could take between 6 - 12 months for a decision to be made depending on what is on your criminal record. Preparing to submit a record suspension takes on average approximately 6 months, however it also depends on how quickly the completed forms take to come back from authorities involved.
Often times potential employers, schools for school trip supervisors, and other volunteer organizations, will require a criminal record check before making any decisions regarding your involvement. Receiving a record suspension may assist with the barriers you could be facing.
